UK MOT Exemption for Classic Cars

Vehicles over 40 years old are exempt from MOT testing in the UK. However, we strongly recommend getting your classic car tested for safety, insurance, and peace of mind.

The Law

Understanding the 40-Year Exemption

Since May 2018, vehicles manufactured or first registered more than 40 years ago have been exempt from MOT testing in the UK. This rolling exemption means a vehicle becomes exempt on the 40th anniversary of its manufacture date.

The exemption applies to most historic vehicles, including classic cars and vintage motorcycles, provided they have not been substantially changed from their original specification.

However, the exemption does not remove your legal responsibility to keep the vehicle in a roadworthy condition. Driving an unroadworthy vehicle remains an offence, regardless of MOT status.

Classic Lamborghini Miura - a vintage supercar exempt from MOT testing in the UK due to being over 40 years old
Classic Mercedes-Benz 190SL - a vintage roadster exempt from MOT testing in the UK due to being over 40 years old

Important: Roadworthiness is Still Required

Even though your classic car may be exempt from the MOT test, you are still legally required to ensure it is roadworthy at all times.

  • Brakes must work effectively
  • Lights and indicators must function
  • Tyres must be legal and safe
  • Steering must be in good condition
Our Recommendation

Why We Recommend Testing Anyway

Just because you can skip the MOT does not mean you should. Here is why a voluntary test makes sense for classic car owners.

Safety First

Classic cars deserve the same safety standards as modern vehicles. An MOT checks brakes, steering, tyres, and lights to ensure your vehicle is safe for you, your passengers, and other road users.

Insurance Requirements

Many insurers prefer or require proof of roadworthiness for classic vehicles. A voluntary MOT certificate demonstrates your car has been professionally inspected, potentially making insurance easier to obtain.

Peace of Mind

After importing a classic car or taking one out of storage, an MOT gives you confidence that everything is working correctly before you hit the road.

Identify Hidden Issues

Our experienced testers can spot problems that might not be obvious, from worn brake components to corroded suspension parts. Catching issues early prevents costly breakdowns.

Imported Classics

Just Imported a Classic Car?

If you have recently imported a classic car from the USA, Europe, or elsewhere, a voluntary MOT is especially valuable. Even if your vehicle qualifies for the 40-year exemption, getting it tested helps in several ways:

  • Insurance confidence: Many UK insurers are more comfortable covering imported classics with proof of roadworthiness
  • Condition verification: Confirm the vehicle arrived in the condition you expected after its journey
  • UK standards check: Ensure lights, tyres, and other components meet UK requirements
  • Family safety: Know your classic is safe before taking your loved ones for a drive

The 40-year exemption applies to all vehicles regardless of origin. Once your imported classic is registered in the UK, it qualifies for the exemption if it meets the age and originality criteria.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Which vehicles are exempt from MOT testing?

Vehicles manufactured or first registered more than 40 years ago are exempt from MOT testing, provided they have not been substantially changed. This includes classic cars, historic vehicles, and vintage motorcycles that meet the criteria.

What counts as a substantial change?

A vehicle is considered substantially changed if the technical characteristics of the main components have been altered. This includes changes to the chassis, body, axles, engine, or steering. Replacing parts with original specification components or period-correct alternatives does not count as a substantial change.

Do I still need to keep my classic car roadworthy?

Yes, absolutely. Even though your vehicle may be exempt from MOT testing, you are still legally required to keep it in a roadworthy condition. Driving an unroadworthy vehicle is an offence, regardless of its MOT status.

Will insurance companies cover an MOT-exempt vehicle?

Most insurers will cover MOT-exempt classic vehicles, but many prefer or require evidence of roadworthiness. Having a voluntary MOT certificate can make obtaining insurance easier and may result in better premiums, as it demonstrates your vehicle has been professionally checked.

Can I voluntarily get an MOT on my exempt vehicle?

Yes, you can request a voluntary MOT test at any authorised testing station. We offer MOT testing at our Milton Keynes facility for classic car owners who want peace of mind about their vehicle's condition.

Does the exemption apply to imported classic cars?

Yes, the 40-year exemption applies to all vehicles regardless of where they were originally manufactured. If you have imported a classic car that is over 40 years old and has not been substantially modified, it qualifies for the exemption once registered in the UK.
