Pickup Trucks to be IVA
The latest VOSA IVA Newsletter states that from 29th October 2011 they will also be testing trucks under the IVA scheme rather than the older SVA scheme as they have been up till now….
From 29th October 2011 completed goods vehicles having a Gross Vehicle Weight of not more than 3500kgs (approval category N!) will become subject to the new EC requirements.
This introduces IVA to vehicles previously subject to SVA. The new IVA includes more inspection items than SVA and aligns more closely to the passenger car requirements.
In order to make the change, applications for SVA will not be accepted following close of business on 23rd September 2011

Mustang UK Buyers Guide
Still the most popular vehicle we are importing is the 2005-2009 Mustang GT, with a 4.6 V8 it puts out over 300bhp through the rear wheels and turns heads wherever it goes in the UK, so what is owning one over here like and what should you look out for when buying one?
Import or buy local?
We would always suggest looking to the states first when sourcing your Mustang, there are many reasons to do this on top of the cost savings you can make. Firstly, there is so much more choice! Dealers in the US are ten times the size of your local Ford dealer, some you have to be driven round in a golf caddy just to view the cars. They usually have every single combination of colour and spec you can think of and we have not yet found an unhelpful Ford dealer who is not willing to spend time finding you the exact vehicle you want. The cars are generally in excellent condition if purchased from a dry state such as Florida or over in California, so if you are looking for a show condition car you can get hold of excellent rust free examples and protect them as soon as they get over here with paintwork protection and undersealing.
Importing one yourself can be daunting, luckily there are companies like ShipMyCar who offer a door to door package which generally works out the same price as you doing it yourself but without any headaches, hidden costs, electrical wiring issues, government agency dealings and more…. ShipMyCar even offer an instant quote facility which is a great help to price up your import as it is free to use and you can use it as many times as you like for any make/model of American car.
If you do decide to buy one in the UK, the very first thing you should do is take it to an IVA specialist such as ShipMyCar – they will be able to check over the SVA/IVA modifications carried out on the car to ensure:
- No dangerous wiring creating a fire hazard
- No obscure ways used to generate resistance to fool the cars ECU such as hidden bulbs in the spare wheel compartment
- Check over wiring connections and methods used to join wires
- If relays used for extra lights check that they have adequate back EMF protection by using diodes
- Ensure brake switch still sending signal to vehicles ECU if modifications have cut into this
- Ensure cruise control still operates correctly and IVA / SVA modifications have been carried out without affecting the cruise control operation and auto-off function
- Ensure method of adding lights has been done in a way that will not cause condensation to build up within existing light clusters and any extra drilling holes have been adequatly sealed from the weather and heat
- Ensure any wiring passing near to hot areas is suitable sheathed and protected
- Check wiring is secured around foot pedal area and no wires are likely to fall and tangle in wiring areas
- Carry out electrical testing on all bulbs to ensure no extra load will be placed on ECU or SJB causing future expensive repairs
Companies like ShipMyCar or ImportMyVehicle, both based in Milton Keynes will also be able to advise on any upgrades or improvements to make driving in the UK a more pleasant experience in your new stang
Owning a Mustang in the UK
Mustang ownership in the UK is so much fun, no car on the market gives you that level of uniqueness, power, rear wheel drive fun, engine noise, great looks, comfort and spec than a Mustang GT for the same price. You will be part of a club which has a very active membership throughout the UK. There are many forums online where you can get great advice on all aspects of Mustang ownership with the best we have found being:
- S197.co.uk – excellent resources for Mustang owners and potential owners, a relaxed forum vibe and constantly updated
- MOCGB.net – Mustang Owners Club of GB, a more official feeling club with emphasis on meets and club events, again a fantastic resource for Mustangs
Driving LHD in the UK
Driving left hand drive in the UK is never a real issue – people say it is hard to overtake, but this generally is not the case as long as you hold back enough from the car in front and then use the big V8 grunt to zoom past easily and effortlessly once the path is safe and clear to do so. The only place you may find an issue is at the local drive-thru, but you will soon find the best way is to sit inside and watch people admiring your car in the car park while you eat your food!
Petrol costs of a Mustang
Everyone always says how expensive it must be to run a Mustang and sure, it is not as cheap as say a Toyota Aygo or a diesel Ford Fiesta, but when comparing like for like, with say a V8 BMW M3 you geniunly will not find any difference at all. In fact I have owned Subaru Imprezas and Mazda RX8s which I found much more juicy day to day than the Mustang. Especially cruising at 60-70mph, the big V8 is hardly struggled and getting 25mpg is not difficult.
Running costs of a Mustang
Amazingly cheap. That’s all we need to say really! Specialists such as ImportMyVehicle will service your car for around £150 – they are not advanced engines and really do not require the utmost of specialist care to keep them in good conditon. Spares are abundant in the UK and very reasonably priced. Road tax is currently still under £200 per year (imports are classed as PLG and based on the old taxation class, not based on emissions). The only cost I found was the constant addiction to buying upgrades from ImportMyVehicle
What is a Mustang like to drive
So much fun, you will never get tired of that big V8 noise and the attention these cars receive – attention is always positive and you often feel something of a celebrity when people take pictures and stop you to chat. We would advise looking into Roush suspension upgrades for the UK, this certainly makes the car more UK road friendly with going round roundabouts and country road sprints made more suitable for the Stang. Mustang GTs are not actually as heavy as people make out, yes they weigh 1500kgs but compare that with a BMW M3 or Audi RS4 – no difference there…
If you are worried about driving LHD opt for the automatic, a lovely smooth gearbox and makes getting used to driving LHD that bit easier.
We hope you have found this Mustang Buyers Guide useful, should you require any further information please contact the specialists such as ShipMyCar or ImportMyVehicle

Due to new rulings we can now often get >30 year old Mustangs in through customs with zero duty and just 5% VAT – the car must be completely unmodified from standard, be of reasonable value and of course be over thirty years of age. It is worth contacting us to help complete your BTI forms for HMRC application.
On arriving in the UK we provide full MOT and DVLA registration services.
Dodge Viper UK
The Dodge Viper or SRT-10 is a frightening machine – any two seater car with an 8.4L V10 pushing 600bhp and huge amounts of torque is not going to be a particularly easy car to drive, but you can be sure it will be a fun car to drive!
The engine is the same used in the huge SRT-10 Dodge Ram truck and in the Viper it does feel a bit truck like, the revs rise slowly but with each rise in rpm bringing a huge rise in mph and noise levels
Importing a Dodge Viper SRT-10 to the UK
We have imported a number of these into the UK and got them through IVA testing requirements – modifying the cars electrical systems yourself is not advised and only an experienced IVA engineer with suitable component parts (such as ShipMyCar’s Lighting Control Module) should take on the challenge.

Chevrolet Camaro Import Guide
Rewiring a Camaro for IVA purposes can be extremely tricky and can even damage your vehicle’s ECU which is very expensive to repair. It is vital that any wiring is carried out by trained IVA engineers such as ours at ShipMyCar and that any new lighting does not create any additional load on the existing circuit.
Modifications Required for IVA test:
- Side Repeator indicators added to fenders – these must be wired in properly using appropriate backward current protection, sealing and heat dispersal. We use LED side lights placed within the wing mirrors to avoid the need to drill into bodywork – see the image of the white Camaro below to see one that was drilled into fender as per customer requirement
- Indicators at rear separated out from brake light and new high intensity LED added for amber flashing:
- Rear Fog Light – ensure light unit is appropriately e-marked, switch added to interior dash which must illuminate and display rear fog light symbol. Fog light must only operate within IVA guidelines
- Side lights added to headlights – these must be correctly sealed and wired to create zero additional load on the vehicle’s electrical system
All the above are included within our full import package which you can obtain an instant quotation on our Car Shipping Website here
Ford Edge UK Import Guide
The Ford Edge will require full IVA modifications in order to comply with UK IVA testing requirements, this will include:
- Side Repeator indicators added to fenders – this must be wired very carefully using appropriate relays with diode protection to ensure no additional load is placed on the vehicles ECU
- Indicators changed to amber and red brake light seperated from indicator – needless to say this amount of re-wiring requires expert IVA engineers such as our very own at ShipMyCar
- Rear Fog light – added with switch on dashboard that complies with the order of fog light activation specified by VOSA for IVA requirements. The light must also have correct E-Markings
- Reversing light added to rear where lights have been moved to accommodate new indicators
- Side lights added to headlights – these must be addeded into headlight units and sealed correctly to avoid condensation

2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition
Combining the Z06’s lightweight body and 505 horsepower naturally-aspirated LS7 with the Magnetic Selective Ride Control and braking found on the ZR1, the Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is being hailed as the best balanced track Corvette yet. Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer says “For technical tracks like Laguna Seca, the Z06 Carbon could shave up to three seconds off the Z06 lap time.”
First let’s talk specifics. Mechanically, for the first time on the Z06, the Z06 Carbon features Magnetic Selective Ride Control, Brembo carbon ceramic brakes with dark gray metallic calipers and enhanced cooling. Black 20-spoke 19-inch front/20-inch rear wheels feature Michelin PS2 tires.
On the exterior, the Z06 Carbon will be produced in two colors: Inferno Orange and Supersonic Blue. The body changes include black headlamps and mirrors, A ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fiber raised hood and black carbon fiber rockers and splitter. For track events, customer-installed Euro-style numbers come with each car.
Inside the Z06 Carbon, you’ll find ebony leather and suede complemented by matching blue or orange seat stitching. A unique steering wheel and sill plates are in place as well as logoed headrests. Suede is used throughout the interior and can be found on the steering wheel, shifter, seat inserts, armrests and doors.
Although the 2011 Corvette Z06 Carbon Edition is limited to 500 units, GM has packaged most of these upgrades into two new RPOs that can be ordered together or separately on any regular Z06.
The optional Z07 performance package includes the mechanical upgrades found the Z06 Carbon: Brakes, ride control and chassis and cooling upgrades. The Z07 also includes the Competition Gray 20-Spoke Wheels.
The CFZ Z06 carbon fiber package includes the black carbon fiber rockers, splitter and roof panel with the full width body color spoiler.

Bugatti Veyron priced from $3.6M in India thanks to 110% taxation
If you live in India, your list of available supercars to purchase just grew by one very fast model. Bugatti has announced it will begin selling its Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport there. Undeterred by the nation’s 110-percent import tax, Bugatti is taking orders for the topless two-door, which will cost about 160 million rupees or $3.6 million USD. For reference, the same model would cost you about $2.24 million here in the United States or €1.6 million in places dealing with Euros. After receiving the orders, the cars will take six to eight months to be delivered
India is a blooming market for luxury goods manufacturers, and Ferrari plans to follow Bugatti by shipping over its California hardtop convertible sportscar. Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and Land Rover are already selling in India… and selling quite well, as the number of Indian millionaires continues to grow.

Importing a 2005-2009 Mustang to the UK
Importing a Mustang to the UK yourself can be a very time consuming and stressful process that
could ultimately damage your vehicle through incorrect wiring.
We offer a complete package from collection in the USA through to testing and registration here in
the UK. This short guide explains the entire procedure.
US Transportation
We will collect your vehicle from the US address on a specialised vehicle transporter and take it over
to the nearest port for you
US Customs
We carry out all the associated paperwork, inspection and vehicle history checks required by US
customs
US Loading
Your vehicle is safely stored in our warehouse prior to loading into a container, strapping and
chocking and then loading of the container onto a vessel
Marine Insurance
Included in your quote is full marine insurance which covers your vehicle up to the full market value
UK Customs and Unloading
We unload your vehicle from the vessel and store in our customs bonded warehouse until we can
collect on your behalf – your vehicle is then moved in house using our specialist car transporter.
IVA Testing
As the Mustang you are looking at is under 10 years old, it will require what is called an IVA test. This
is basically a very thorough test which checks everything on the Mustang complies with UK road
laws, items on the Mustang which require changing are:
- Rear brake lights separated out from indicators
- Indicators changed from red to amber flashing signal
- Addition of front side lights
- Disable US running lights correctly using appropriate resistance
- HID Headlight units replaced with Halogen for testing requirements
- Addition of rear fog light and interior switch clearly displaying rear fog light symbol
If you have spent time researching the IVA modifications you will understand just how difficult and
dangerous the wiring can be. Modern cars work on a Canbus system which basically means when
you flick a switch, a signal is first sent to a computer (ECU) which determines what you want it to do,
and takes the appropriate action. Adding extra lights and incorrect resistances can put extra strain
on the ECU and ultimately lead to complete failure.
Our 2005-2009 modifications include EU light clusters to avoid the horrible addition of rear fog light
and reversing light on the bottom of the rear bumper
Our side repeaters are nice looking smoked units and the front side lights are LED to reduce the need
to ever change them and are fully insulated to avoid the light units clouding up
MOT Testing
If your vehicle is over three years old it will also require an MOT test – this ensures the
roadworthiness of the vehicle, e.g. does it have worn tyres / worn suspension parts?
DVLA Registration
We complete your paperwork and take it straight to the DVLA to provide you with a UK logbook and
registration number, we then print up your plates and fix them to you new Mustang
