@gumball3000 photos

Gumball 3000 is one of those motoring events that fill the internet with some incredible automotive photos of beautiful supercars.

Below are some of the best that we have found of this year’s 2011 Rally, as well as some we took from working with them on shipping the cars around the world

There are millions more and we will add them as we find them – be sure to share this page below to bookmark it on your favourite social networks…

At the starting grid of the supercar rally Covent Garden on May 26, EcoForecourt will set up a display of cars including the Peugeot EX1 and Racing Green Endurance team’s cross continental Radical SR-0.

Peugeot EX1 Electric Supercar

Peugeot EX1 Electric Supercar

On April 27th, Peugeot sent its radically styled EX1 electric ’round the ‘Ring, setting a record for battery-powered vehicles with a time of 9 minutes 1.338 seconds.

The Nürburgring actually consists of several interlacing tracks, with the main stretch, the Nordschleife, comprising almost 13 miles of hairpin turns, undulating surfaces and lengthy straightaways.

Peugeot’s electric sports car averaged a rather impressive 85.9 miles per hour on the demanding 12-plus mile Nordschleife track. The EX1 smoked the previous electric vehicle record of 9:51

The noise of the electric car sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie:

HID Upgrade | Conversion

HID lights can be 300% brighter than standard car lights – the clear white light produced by a Xenon bulb is similar to daylight. Research has shown that this enables drivers to concentrate better. Furthermore, this particular light colour reflects the road markings and signs better than conventional lighting once you have driven with HID Xenon you will never want to go back to Halogen.

The xenon bulb will last up to 10 times longer than a standard halogen bulb and even longer compared to the new whiter halogen bulbs. An average life is 2000 hours.

A good supplier of HID conversion kits is:

HID Lights and IVA

When importing a vehicle into the UK that is less than ten years old, you will need to have an IVA test carried out. This checks that the car complies with UK road laws and checks items such as exhaust noise, seatbelts, windscreen wipers, sprayers and lighting.

Front headlights if HID must be e-marked and have washer jets to clean them – ShipMyCar can carry out any needed conversion on your behalf

Brabus iBusiness 2.0 | 800bhp

Brabus does some crazy things to already fast Mercedes and usually concentrate on performance and exterior styling, however for their latest incarnation the Brabus “iBusiness 2.0″ they have spent a lot of time fine tuning the interior of the executive S-Class Mercedes.

Brabus iBusiness 2.0

Brabus iBusiness 2.0

It all begins in the boot, with a Mac Mini mounted in a leather-lined tray inside the trunk. The Mac connects up with a 15.2-inch TFT, 16:9 aspect ratio display that mechanically unfolds from the alcantara-coated headliner and can also be used as an auxiliary display for the – not one, but two – iPad 2s mounted in the electronically deployed and adjustable custom tables mounted behind the two front seats. The tables secure both the tablets and a Apple Bluetooth keyboard which can utilise Apple Facetime for live video conferencing on the move

Brabus iBusiness - Apple powered

Brabus iBusiness - Apple powered

Brabus has fitted the S with a WiFi network comprised of UMTS and HDSPA networking to wireless wire everything together. More impressive, the German tuner developed a custom app for the iPads that allows backseat passengers to control every aspect of Mercedes’ COMAND infotainment system

A 64Gb Apple iPod Touch is mounted in the rear center console and sends music to either the standard S-Class sound system or a pair of Sennheiser Noise Gard headphones, which can also be used to plumb in one of a few hundred channels provided by the wireless DVBT television receiver.

As for road performance the Brabus puts out 800 horsepower and 1,047 pound-feet of torque pulled from the twin-turbocharged V12, meaning the Mercedes can acheive 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds and on to an electronically-limited top speed of 219 mph.

Nissan Car Exports – Radiation

As fears of radiation from Japan’s severely compromised Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant seem to be growing by the minute, automakers have tried to assure car buyers that most of their products are produced far enough away from the crippled facility that fallout won’t end up on vehicles, but a report from Kicking Tires shows that Nissan wants to go a step further.

Nissan will reportedly perform a radiation inspection on all vehicles imported from Japan; a process that will continue until all threats of contamination have subsided.

Nissan, along with other Japanese automakers, is also trying to better assess any potential supply disruptions that could come as a result of the quake and ensuing tsunami. The automaker claims that its current supply of vehicles here in the U.S. stands at 50 days worth of cars, trucks and SUVs. That number could dwindle, however, as current estimates show that the carmaker has at least seven days worth of parts. After those seven days are up, the company will reportedly reassess its situation.

Nissan Toyota Radiation and Prices

Nissan Toyota Radiation and Prices

The problems facing automakers in the wake of Japan’s deadly earthquake and the resulting tsunami are already manifesting themselves in the form of higher transaction prices on some Japanese cars, as U.S. dealers show less willingness to negotiate downward from the number on the window sticker, according to an AP report.

Automakers like Toyota, Honda and Nissan all say they have a sufficient supply of vehicles in the U.S. that had already been imported from Japan before the disaster struck. So, if there are still plenty of Japanese cars on Stateside lots, why the hardening prices?

It’s a simple case of supply and demand, explain some dealers polled by The Associated Press. “We’re going to run out of cars. We had five [Prius hybrids] on the ground yesterday, and I don’t know when I’ll get another,” says Dave Conant, owner of a Toyota dealership in San Diego, CA. “The market has shifted pretty quickly and dramatically.”

Of course, some people believe dealerships are just using speculative vehicle shortages to make a few extra bucks. We suspect the truth may be a little bit of both.

Mercedes Auto Boot FAIL

You may have seen the new Mercedes with the fancy boot opening that you can control with just a touch of the button – you can even control the amount that it opens using the onboard computer…

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you pushed the button when entering a carwash? Watch the below video to find out…

We would always advise using a quality hand car wash, valeting or detailing service to keep your car clean – automatic car washes can damage your paint (and flood your boot if you leave it open…)

Solar Powered Roads

Is a solar-powered glass road in our driving future? Scott Brusaw, an engineer from Idaho, believes so. With aid and interest from the federal government and General Electric, Brusaw has been refining his concept of the road of the future. Super-strong glass and solar cells embedded below the top layers could serve as both a nexus of travel and energy.

As the sun energizes the solar cells, energy can be transferred to power street signs, nearby homes and roadside businesses. In snowy climates, the collected energy could heat the roadway and melt snow and ice, eliminating the need for large fleets of plows.

Brusaw insists that glass developers can create a strong enough material that traction and durability would not be an issue. A few problems do stand in the way of course, as is typically the case with new ideas and technology. Most notable of these problems is the issue of cost. Brusaw estimates that it would costs about $4.4 million per mile to lay down this super-glass roadway. Of course, the road would eventually recoup that money and even generate a greater return, but the initial cost is a daunting one.

Brusaw hopes to begin proving the effectiveness of the technology and he is going to do so by starting smaller by teaming up with a nationwide chain to revamp existing parking lots. The lots could be heated and also over a recharging station for electric vehicles.

2012 AC Cobra

2012 marks half a century since the very first Cobra was released on the street, and to celebrate, Shelby has announced a limited-edition 50th Anniversary model that was introduced at Barrett-Jackson earlier today. Using CSX8000 chassis numbers, each of the continuation cars will be painted in “Shelby Black” and feature a premium leather interior, wire wheels and special badging.

Shelby 50th Anniversary Cobra

Shelby 50th Anniversary Cobra

Pricing for a 50th Anniversary Cobra rolling chassis (car minus drivetrain) is set at $69,995 or $134,995 for an aluminum-bodied car. Expensive, yes, but with just 50 units slated for production, we can see them getting snapped up pretty quickly.

Shelby 50th Anniversary Cobra

Let us ship your Cobra to the UK

We have brought a number of Cobra’s into the UK and you must be aware of the amount of work needed to get one through an IVA test – any Cobra with a US registration over ten years old will require IVA testing once shipped to the UK and it is not an easy test to get through! A few items which need altering to comply with IVA requirements:

  • Wooden steering wheel must be changed
  • Sharp edges removed – any edge that has a small radius must be either covered or smoothed – on many Cobras that will include window trims, internal switches, fuel cap, many chrome parts
  • Noise and emissions – exhaust must meet IVA requirements which will mean at least the addition of catalytic convertors
  • Seats – must switch over seats for race seats with headrests
  • Fuel cap must be lockable or not be able to be removed from key when off of car
  • Lights – will need to be amber indicators, side lights, side repeater indicators, headlights pointing in correct direction and brake lights separate to indicators
  • Rear fog light
  • Windscreen heater
  • Windscreen wipers
  • Door locks changed to include two stage closing with proper latch
  • and more….
  • If you are thinking of bringing a kit car back to the UK which is less than ten years old we recommend you contact ShipMyCar not only for your car shipping requirements but also to obtain more information on our IVA modification packages – why have the stress of all of the above when we can get it all done for you!?

Aston Martin Cygnet

If you’ve been wondering exactly how much Aston Martin plans on charging for the pleasure of owning its new Toyota iQ Cygnet, wonder no more. Aston Martin Cygnet

Aston Martin Cygnet

Aston Martin is offering two special-edition version of the Cygnet to commemorate the car’s launch. The first, fittingly called the Cygnet Launch Edition White, is slathered in Snow White paint. If this is Aston Martin’s interpretation of the fairest of them all, we’d hate to see the seven dwarves. The exterior also gets plenty of chrome bright work and custom wheels, while the interior gets pearl-white leather and satin chrome accents.

If that’s just not naughty enough for you, Aston Martin is also offering up the Cygnet Launch Edition Black. The evil twin is dipped in Magic Black paint that hides shades of green. Ferrari P4/5 Competizione

Jim Glickenhaus and his team have given their stunning Ferrari P4/5 Competizione its first taste of track time with a short sprint around a closed course. According to Glickenhaus, the run went better than expected with the one-off Ferrari interpretation staying light on its feet and easy to fling. Despite testing on a relatively short track, the driver was able to ratchet the car up to third gear before having to call it quits.

As you may recall, the Ferrari P4/5 Competitizione is hewn from carbon fiber and borrows pieces from the similarly sinister Ferrari F430. The last time we saw the car, Glickenhaus and his team were putting the finishing touches on the vehicle for its first shake down.

The Glickenhaus Ferrari P4/5 Competizione is set to wage war against the rest of the fighters at this year’s 24 Hours of Nürburgring. That means that this beast will square off against the likes of the Porsche 918 RSR and a host of other high-power creations. We can’t wait.

F1 in HD finally!

Motorsports fans, rejoice. Formula One took its sweet time in rolling out coverage in glorious High Definition, but starting next season, viewers will be able to soak up all the open-wheel action in 1080i resolution. According to Autosport, F1 organizers have been toying with the notion of delivering an HD feed for some time. This winter, Formula One Management began testing brand-new equipment to make sure that broadcasts could be made at the rate of 42 mbps. Those tests apparently went well, as FOM has announced that every F1 camera will be replaced with new HD hardware. In-car cameras, meanwhile, will still be standard definition.

So far, a handful of broadcasters have already committed to carrying the new HD coverage, including Sky Germany and Globo in Brazil. There’s no word as to whether American fans will be able to sink their eyeballs into the 1080i broadcast or if we’ll be stuck with a scaled-down version of the feed. According to Autosport, that’s exactly what most viewers in the UK can expect. Rumor has it that the BBC has its eyes on broadcasting the races on its HD channel and then downscaling the footage for the rest of its viewers. Thanks to all for the tips!

New Ford GT?

OK, we have imported a number of Ford GTs and through our status as authorised Roush Dealer can have them IVA tested by the best in the business, Roush UK (or Revolve as they are formally known) so it is with great interest that we have heard a rumour regarding the possibility of a successor to the last, frankly incredible, Ford GT.

Ford GT successor

Director of ShipMyCar in Ford GT

The news comes courtesy of Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s head of global product development. After being questioned about the possibility of a GT successor, Kuzak chose his words very carefully by admitting that there are certain things in the four-year product plan that the company isn’t comfortable with discussing. While that’s not an out-and-out confirmation that the Blue Oval wants to see another mid-engine, high-horsepower machine in its stable, the overly diplomatic response does indicate that the thought may have crossed more than a few minds in Dearborn.

Having seen the likes of Mercedes and Porsche head down the hybrid route we are thinking perhaps Ford are planning some kind of hybrid super car to rival them both, and fingers crossed our thinking comes true as the last GT was awesome.

Group B Rally

Though it only existed for four short years, Group B racing has continued to captivate fans of all ages. From 1982 through 1986, motorsports enthusiasts around the world gathered en masse to watch Lancia, Audi, Renault and Peugeot battle for supremacy. Ferrari and Porsche even got in on the action with the legendary 288 GTO and 959, respectively. The cars were lightweight, powerful and sounded like they built in Hell by the Devil himself. In other words, the cars were a sight to behold and a treat to the ears. They were also incredibly dangerous.

Large groups of people stood on the edge of the road as the beasts rumbled by at triple-digit speeds. Accidents happened and there were a number of fatal incidents for both drivers and viewers alike. In 1986, the FIA banned Group B cars, but the legendary vehicles are still held in high regard. If you need a refresher, roar past the jump to watch the Group B monsters in action.

Once you’ve watched the clip, sound off in the comments and let us know what you think would be the most terrifying vehicle to try and pilot. Group B cars are near the top of the list but we’re sure you can think of some others… Top Fuel Dragsters, board-track racers, land-speed record streamliners…

VW London Taxi Concept

VW have released images of what they think is the future of urban transport choices – sadly London taxi regulations are extremely strict and this as it stands would not comply, but it is a very clever little car with a fully electric range of 186miles.

Inside there are touch screens which can provide information on the route (and no doubt the fee!)

VW London Taxi Concept

VW London Taxi Concept

We were wondering whether 186 miles would be enough for a full days work in London? Certainly here at ShipMyCar we have doubts that they would last long round the roundabout filled city of Milton Keynes before running low on batteries and having to be off the road – not good for a busy taxi driver….

New Stratos unveiled

The New Stratos has been drumming up a world of enthusiasm. And with good reason: the original was one of the most iconic rally machines ever devised, and the modern tribute looks to be living up to the legend in the grandest of style. That hasn’t stopped some from saying the design doesn’t look enough like the original, but that could very well come down to the paint scheme.

New Stratos

No, what we really need is to see it in the same livery displayed on the original in its heyday. Fortunately that’s just what they brought out (as a mock-up from the looks of things) at the car’s debut at Paul Ricard HTTT in the South of France.

Our Mustang on Top Gear

A couple of years back we let BBC Top Gear borrow one of our Roush Stage 3 Mustangs – The Stig gave it a good thrashing round the track and Clarkson even said it was a “properly good car” – quite the compliment for an American car!

Watch the video here:

Here is a sneaky shot we got of the Stig with the car after the track drive:

BBC Top Gear The Stig with Mustang

BBC Top Gear The Stig with our Stage 3 Roush Mustang

Unfortunately on the show they stated the Roush was £10k more than the Shelby when in fact they are actually cheaper than the Shelby, but nevertheless, a great day out!

The Roush was fine to drive back to our ShipMyCar offices afterwards – brakes were a bit on the spongy side but generally all was OK considering the thrashing it was given

F1 goes with 1.6L power

Soon we can all say goodbye to the high-revving V8s currently shrieking their way around the world’s Formula One circuits. F1 has officially enacted new rules that require all teams to run a new turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine design by 2013. In addition, the maximum engine speed will be reduced from the current 18,000 rpm to a maximum of 12,000 rpm.

All told, the changes are expected to allow the vehicles to use around 35 percent less fuel than the outgoing eight-pots, even while churning out very similar power numbers. While neither the FIA nor F1 organizers are willing to throw out any solid numbers, there is word that the engines will use high-pressure gasoline injectors that can dump fuel into the combustion chamber at up to 7,251 psi.

Atomization? Yeah, it looks like they’ve got that covered.

Interestingly enough, F1 is also moving to limit the number of engines (again) that a team can use during a season. Right now, the rules allow for a stable of eight engines, though by 2013, that number will drop to five before falling to four soon after. That would mean on top of nabbing better fuel economy and yielding high power, the new lumps will need to be stout enough to take the abuse of multiple races without popping

Porsche GT2 RS

The GT2 is already a very fast car, but this thing is even more extreme, the 911 GT2 RS produces 611bhp – yep, still all through the rear wheels – weighs 1,370kg and will go from standstill to 124mph in under ten seconds.

That’s 88bhp more powerful and 70kg lighter than the GT2. That’s 8bhp more than the Carrera GT. That’s a power-to-weight ratio of 435bhp per tonne.

0-60mph? 3.4 seconds – point-two quicker than the GT2. Top speed is 205mph.

Watch it being driven expertly around the Porsche Silverstone track just down the road from us at ShipMyCar Car Shipping
