The old 6.1L engine has been uprated to a 6.4L V8 Hemi which now puts out 465bhp giving this beast the power to get from 0-60 in under five seconds.

Damaged Nuclear Plant

Radiation from the plant has been found in agricultural sources, too, which has prompted 29 countries and regions to suspend or tighten controls on food and dairy products. Bloomberg reports that radiation fears have prompted the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) to begin testing vehicles for radiation prior to shipments at home and abroad. The move follows steps already being taking by Nissan to test all vehicles prior to shipment.

JAMA has mainly decided to perform the radiation checks to calm the nerves of some customers who have asked if their products are still safe, and so far radiation has been negligible. JAMA tells Bloomberg that, at least so far, foreign countries haven’t introduced suspensions or strict measures. One container ship was asked to head back to Japan from China after radiation levels of 3.5 microsieverts per hour were detected. The typical X-ray is 100 microsieverts.

From 29th October 2011 completed goods vehicles having a Gross Vehicle Weight of not more than 3500kgs (approval category N!) will become subject to the new EC requirements.

This introduces IVA to vehicles previously subject to SVA. The new IVA includes more inspection items than SVA and aligns more closely to the passenger car requirements.

2012 Boss 302 Laguna Seca Mustang

We would always suggest looking to the states first when sourcing your Mustang, there are many reasons to do this on top of the cost savings you can make. Firstly, there is so much more choice! Dealers in the US are ten times the size of your local Ford dealer, some you have to be driven round in a golf caddy just to view the cars. They usually have every single combination of colour and spec you can think of and we have not yet found an unhelpful Ford dealer who is not willing to spend time finding you the exact vehicle you want. The cars are generally in excellent condition if purchased from a dry state such as Florida or over in California, so if you are looking for a show condition car you can get hold of excellent rust free examples and protect them as soon as they get over here with paintwork protection and undersealing.

Driving LHD in the UK

Driving left hand drive in the UK is never a real issue – people say it is hard to overtake, but this generally is not the case as long as you hold back enough from the car in front and then use the big V8 grunt to zoom past easily and effortlessly once the path is safe and clear to do so. Petrol costs of a Mustang

Everyone always says how expensive it must be to run a Mustang and sure, it is not as cheap as say a Toyota Aygo or a diesel Ford Fiesta, but when comparing like for like, with say a V8 BMW M3 you geniunly will not find any difference at all. Nissan will reportedly perform a radiation inspection on all vehicles imported from Japan; a process that will continue until all threats of contamination have subsided.

Nissan, along with other Japanese automakers, is also trying to better assess any potential supply disruptions that could come as a result of the quake and ensuing tsunami. The automaker claims that its current supply of vehicles here in the U.S. stands at 50 days worth of cars, trucks and SUVs. That number could dwindle, however, as current estimates show that the carmaker has at least seven days worth of parts. After those seven days are up, the company will reportedly reassess its situation.

The problems facing automakers in the wake of Japan’s deadly earthquake and the resulting tsunami are already manifesting themselves in the form of higher transaction prices on some Japanese cars, as U.S. dealers show less willingness to negotiate downward from the number on the window sticker, according to an AP report.

Automakers like Toyota, Honda and Nissan all say they have a sufficient supply of vehicles in the U.S. that had already been imported from Japan before the disaster struck. So, if there are still plenty of Japanese cars on Stateside lots, why the hardening prices?

It’s a simple case of supply and demand, explain some dealers polled by The Associated Press. “We’re going to run out of cars. We had five [Prius hybrids] on the ground yesterday, and I don’t know when I’ll get another,” says Dave Conant, owner of a Toyota dealership in San Diego, CA. “The market has shifted pretty quickly and dramatically.”

Of course, some people believe dealerships are just using speculative vehicle shortages to make a few extra bucks. We suspect the truth may be a little bit of both.

What is required for importing a car to the UK?

Background information
There are two primary reasons why car insurance firms are targeting imported car owners in particular. The first is the extra costs which are anticipated when ever spare parts for a repair are required due to the need to seek out and import these parts from another country.
The second reason is the varying standards of quality which are imposed by legislators in different countries. For example, cars manufactured in America are designed to comply with a different set of regulations from those manufactured in the EU. This has led to car insurance firms classifying imported vehicles into two different categories:
• Parallel imports- These are vehicles which have been built in Europe and therefore comply with EU legal specifications.
• Grey imports- These are vehicles which have not been built in Europe and are therefore not EU approved.
Owners of Grey imports can generally expect an interrogation from potential car insurers for the reason of these varying legal specifications to which manufacturers must adhere. It has also not escaped the attention of car insurers that cars imported from Japan generally have higher specifications than the same vehicle when it is created in Europe. This means that Grey import owners will likely be asked to disclose their cars exact specifications (i.e. top speed, acceleration, brake horse power etc) to the insurer so that they can calculate a premium and can occasionally face higher premiums.

Money saving tips
There is still significant savings to be made through buying vehicles from abroad due to the high pre-tax costs which are placed upon vehicles bought in the UK. This makes it likely that cost savings can still be made despite the slightly higher annual insurance costs. However, there are still things that imported car owners can do in order to lower insurance premiums:
1. Search far and wide- the best piece of advice that can be given is to compare prices with as many different insurers as possible in order to give you the best chance of finding the cheapest possible premium. The quickest and easiest way of doing this is through price comparison services which will compare offers from hundreds of different insurers in a matter of moments.
2. Look into specialist insurers- Insurance firms which claim to specialise in imported vehicles will often offer lower premiums as they will likely have more knowledge of the car specifications of the vehicles. However, this is not always the case as these insurers are sometimes unable to compete with their larger competitors in terms of offering lower prices.
3. Preparation is everything- Make sure that you prepare yourself for the car insurer’s interrogation, particularly if you are the owner of a grey import. This means you have to be clued up on everything about your vehicle’s specifications in order to give you the best chance of getting the cheapest premium. However, never purposefully lie about specifications to your insurer as this could render your policy void in the event of a claim.
4. Your mileage allocation- The more miles you travel, the more likely you are to have an accident. This basic fact is the reason why car insurers will offer lower premiums to drivers who travel less. However, be careful not to set your mileage allowance too low as this would be another good way of rendering you policy void; allowing your insurer to dodge a payout in the event of a claim.
5. Parking and security- Imported vehicles are generally more valuable than those bought in the UK because they are generally rarer. Insurers recognise this and will therefore offer cheaper premiums to imported car owners who have made an effort to ensure that their vehicle is both parked in a safe place and equipped with security systems. This means that imported car owners should try to park in a garage when possible and fit approved Thatcham security systems such as alarms and immobilisers which will result in a significant insurance cost reduction.

Scott Brusaw, an engineer from Idaho, believes so. With aid and interest from the federal government and General Electric, Brusaw has been refining his concept of the road of the future. Super-strong glass and solar cells embedded below the top layers could serve as both a nexus of travel and energy.



As the sun energizes the solar cells, energy can be transferred to power street signs, nearby homes and roadside businesses. In snowy climates, the collected energy could heat the roadway and melt snow and ice, eliminating the need for large fleets of plows.

Brusaw insists that glass developers can create a strong enough material that traction and durability would not be an issue. A few problems do stand in the way of course, as is typically the case with new ideas and technology. Most notable of these problems is the issue of cost. Brusaw estimates that it would costs about $4.4 million per mile to lay down this super-glass roadway. Of course, the road would eventually recoup that money and even generate a greater return, but the initial cost is a daunting one.

Brusaw hopes to begin proving the effectiveness of the technology and he is going to do so by starting smaller by teaming up with a nationwide chain to revamp existing parking lots. The lots could be heated and also over a recharging station for electric vehicles.

A few items which need altering to comply with IVA requirements:

• Wooden steering wheel must be changed
• Sharp edges removed – any edge that has a small radius must be either covered or smoothed – on many Cobras that will include window trims, internal switches, fuel cap, many chrome parts
• Noise and emissions – exhaust must meet IVA requirements which will mean at least the addition of catalytic convertors
• Seats – must switch over seats for race seats with headrests
• Fuel cap must be lockable or not be able to be removed from key when off of car

Despite testing on a relatively short track, the driver was able to ratchet the car up to third gear before having to call it quits.

Formula One took its sweet time in rolling out coverage in glorious High Definition, but starting next season, viewers will be able to soak up all the open-wheel action in 1080i resolution. According to Autosport, F1 organizers have been toying with the notion of delivering an HD feed for some time. This winter, Formula One Management began testing brand-new equipment to make sure that broadcasts could be made at the rate of 42 mbps. Those tests apparently went well, as FOM has announced that every F1 camera will be replaced with new HD hardware. In-car cameras, meanwhile, will still be standard definition.



So far, a handful of broadcasters have already committed to carrying the new HD coverage, including Sky Germany and Globo in Brazil. There’s no word as to whether American fans will be able to sink their eyeballs into the 1080i broadcast or if we’ll be stuck with a scaled-down version of the feed. According to Autosport, that’s exactly what most viewers in the UK can expect. Rumor has it that the BBC has its eyes on broadcasting the races on its HD channel and then downscaling the footage for the rest of its viewers. Thanks to all for the tips!

The news comes courtesy of Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s head of global product development. After being questioned about the possibility of a GT successor, Kuzak chose his words very carefully by admitting that there are certain things in the four-year product plan that the company isn’t comfortable with discussing. While that’s not an out-and-out confirmation that the Blue Oval wants to see another mid-engine, high-horsepower machine in its stable, the overly diplomatic response does indicate that the thought may have crossed more than a few minds in Dearborn.

Having seen the likes of Mercedes and Porsche head down the hybrid route we are thinking perhaps Ford are planning some kind of hybrid super car to rival them both, and fingers crossed our thinking comes true as the last GT was awesome.

Import VAT and Duty depends on a number of factors which we will discuss below:
• Have you owned the car for at least six months outside of the EU?

  If you have owned the vehicle for at least six months and lived outside of the EU for at least one year (185 consecutive days) then you will not have to pay any import VAT or duty (which is nice.)

  In order to prove this we will require proof of US residency from at least one year ago, for example a utility bill, bank / mortgage statement and also proof of vehicle ownership from at least six months ago, for example an insurance certificate or title/registration document

• Are you importing a car to the UK which was built in the EU, e.g. a Porsche, Bentley, MG, Jaguar, Lotus, Lamborghini, etc?

  If so you will not have to pay the usual import duty, just £50 and then the usual 20% VAT on top.

• Is the car you are importing over 50 years old?

  If so you will not have to pay any import duty and just 5% VAT.

• Is the vehicle you are importing into the UK over 30 years old?

  Customs now allow certain cars older than 30 years old into the UK without paying any duty and just 5% VAT – the car has to be in original form with no major modifications to engine, chassis etc. There are different conditions that must be met but it is best to apply with customs early if you think your vehicle may fit the criteria (for more information please see our article ‘BTI Scheme 9705‘)

• Is the vehicle you are importing into the UK a pickup truck or commercial vehicle?

  If so, you will have to pay 22% duty and usual 20% VAT on top – being commercial you may be able to claim the VAT back if using it within your business, but best to check with your accountant first.

• Can I bring it in as a temporary import and not pay anything?

  If you plan to only keep the car in the UK for less than six months then you can complete a C110 form and not pay any tax/duty. The car must be already registered outside of the EU and if the numberplates use lettering that is not recognisable in the UK you may need temporary import plates.

• Are you importing this as a personal import or for your company?

  If importing as a VAT registered company we will require a letter from you on headed paper stating that you wish to import the vehicle under your VAT registration number.

• What are the usual rates of import duty?

  OK, the bit you have all been waiting for…. So, if the car is not a European returning car, less than 30 years old and not of historical significance, e.g. a standard 2005 Mustang for example, you will be liable to 10% duty (or 22% if a pickup/commercial) and then 20% VAT on top

• How do they calculate import duty and VAT?

  Import duty and VAT is calculated on the invoice provided to show how much you paid for the vehicle – first it is converted into GBP using the current exchange rate (set each month by customs for this purpose) – we then add on a nominal adjustment for shipping (usually around £500) – you then multiply this amount by the duty rate applicable for your vehicle. You now know how much duty you will be paying. Take this figure and add it back onto your vehicle value and then multiply by 20% – this is how much VAT you will pay (yes VAT is on duty too…..)

• So can I get out of paying VAT or Duty by shipping the car first to lots of different countries, taking the engine out, smashing the windscreen, claiming it is a pretend car, a kit car or a block of cheese?

  Basically, no.

1. For most imports – cars that you have not owned more than six months, European cars, trucks, etc you will need to fill in a C384 form: C384
2. For vehicles you have owned for more than six months and if you have lived outside of the EU for at least one year (we will also need proof as discussed above): C104A

As with past years, the glossy pages are packed from margin to margin with everything you need to give your Bow Tie a little extra giddy up. For 2011, the catalog has fully embraced the Camaro, and a pair of dealer-tweaked versions of the Chevrolet muscle car show exactly what you can do with little more than a crate engine and some spare time.

DeNooyer Chevrolet in New York decided to plop an LSX454 in their orange Camaro, coupled to a six-speed manual transmission via the same clutch used in the mighty Corvette ZR-1. The car turns over 520 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque at the rear wheels thanks to a tune-port fuel injection system.

But that’s downright child’s play compared to what the minds at NeSmith Chevrolet in Georgia cooked up. Those wrenches plopped an LS9 behind the Camaro’s headlights. With minor tweaking, the supercharged V8 is kicking out right at 700 horsepower, and NeSmith threw in beefier axles and a Baer brake system to bring the whole party to a stop.

Unfortunately on the show they stated the Roush was £10k more than the Shelby when in fact they are actually cheaper than the Shelby, but nevertheless, a great day out!

The Roush was fine to drive back to our ShipMyCar offices afterwards – brakes were a bit on the spongy side but generally all was OK considering the thrashing it was given

It has taken leaks and constant speculation to get them to come out with it. And even now, they are barely lifting the cover.

But this week they have shown some photos and specifications of the upcoming club racer version of the new 2012 BOSS 302 Mustang. Much akin to the Mustang Challenge FR-500S race cars, the BOSS 302R is a non-street legal bare bones racer that is one step below the Grand-Am spec BOSS 302R.

Like the FR-500 series cars, the BOSS 302S will be available “over the counter” from your local Ford Racing Dealer. The BOSS 302 440hp 5.0 liter V8 engine is showroom stock, but downstream of that are some better 3.73 gears and an upgraded Torsen limited slip differential.



2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 Racing

The car will be built at the Flat Rock assembly plant along side the other BOSS 302s but will have a lighter body structure lacking sealers, glues, and sound deadening. Additional tweaks are made to allow the installation of FIA racing equipment as well.

A full list of specifications and features is below for the build MSRP is $79,000, which is pretty good for a car that you can take right out and race in the World Challenge GTS and NASA American Iron Series with few mods and additions.Both Mustangs will be produced at Ford’s Mustang factory in Michigan. More details shortly.

F1 has officially enacted new rules that require all teams to run a new turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine design by 2013. In addition, the maximum engine speed will be reduced from the current 18,000 rpm to a maximum of 12,000 rpm.

All told, the changes are expected to allow the vehicles to use around 35 percent less fuel than the outgoing eight-pots, even while churning out very similar power numbers. While neither the FIA nor F1 organizers are willing to throw out any solid numbers, there is word that the engines will use high-pressure gasoline injectors that can dump fuel into the combustion chamber at up to 7,251 psi.

Atomization? Yeah, it looks like they’ve got that covered.

Interestingly enough, F1 is also moving to limit the number of engines (again) that a team can use during a season. Right now, the rules allow for a stable of eight engines, though by 2013, that number will drop to five before falling to four soon after. That would mean on top of nabbing better fuel economy and yielding high power, the new lumps will need to be stout enough to take the abuse of multiple races without popping

That’s 88bhp more powerful and 70kg lighter than the GT2. That’s 8bhp more than the Carrera GT. That’s a power-to-weight ratio of 435bhp per tonne.

0-60mph? 3.4 seconds – point-two quicker than the GT2. Top speed is 205mph.

The mere mention of the word is enough to strike fear into the hearts of lesser powerplants… or at least images of a pair of scrubby-looking bottom-feeders that really love themselves some Ram Trucks. In any case, we’re keenly interested in the latest Hemi engine from the Dodge Boys, in this case displacing a heady 392 (or so) cubic inches and placed gently inside the engine bay of the 2011 Challenger SRT8.

Not only is this new Hemi larger than the already oversized version it replaces, it’s also considerably more potent. The Pentastar says that its new 392 kicks out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque – substantial improvements over the outgoing SRT8′s 425 hp/420 lb-ft. But those are factory ratings, and we all know those don’t necessarily match what’s actually under the hood of production models.



2011 Challenger SRT8 Dyno

Thankfully, the crew over at Inside Line managed to score enough time with a 2011 Challenger SRT8 to strap it down to a proper dyno. And the results? How about 452 horses at 6200 RPM and 443 lb-ft at 4400? Yep, that’ll do nicely, and it means that Dodge may actually be underrating its potent performer just a tad. Oh, and for what it’s worth, IL managed to record 370 horses and 343 lb-ft from its 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS on the same exact dyno. Chevy’s answer ought to be coming in the form of a Z28 with over 500 supercharged ponies… Stay tuned, the horsepower wars are clearly still in full swing.

VW has managed to boost output of the 8.0-liter W16 engine to 1,183 horsepower and torque to 1,106 pound-feet through a variety of enhancements, notably the application of four larger turbochargers and intercoolers. Power is fed to all four wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox.

Insuring these when we ship them is vital, even a slight knock can cost upwards of £40k to repair, tyres come in at around the same cost, in fact everything about it is expensive, but if you have the sort of money to buy one i’m sure you really don’t care!
